LAFAYETTE   — Mr. Hillous Clay Jones, 392 Gabraith Lane, Lafayette, TN 37083-3423.  I am writing this to let you know that my brother Hillous Jones passed away on November 11, 2011.  He loved to play checkers and competed in tournaments in several states during the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s. He mostly competed in the majors, but he told me he won the Tennessee Closed Tournament in the 80’s or early 90’s.  He was a lifetime member of the ACF.  Hillous Clay Jones was born August 10, 1934.  He was 77 years, 3 months, 1 day old.  He left behind his wife, two daughters, two grandchildren (a boy and a girl), three brothers, and one sister. Hillous was taken with a disease that mimics Parkinsons that gradually rendered him immobile, and over the last 2½ years that he spent in a nursing home, he got weaker. He got pneumonia and died in Macon General Hospital in Lafayette TN., with family by his bedside. Submitted by Clyde Jones.  Hillous Jones' Obiturary

Obituary of Hillous Clay Jones

MR. HILLOUS JONES - age 77 of Lafayette passed away on Friday evening, November 11, 2011 at Macon County General Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Hillous Jones were conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Henry Smith. Interment followed in the Scott Cemetery.

Hillous Clay Jones was born on August 10, 1934 in Monroe County, Kentucky to the late Layton Emery Jones and Brittie Victoria Doss Jones. He was one of six siblings born to this union. Hillous went to school in Akersville, Kentucky and graduated from Monroe County High School. Hillous was saved, baptized, and joined Akersville Missionary Baptist Church in 1957.

Hillous loved his mother, father, brothers, and sister dearly. Times were hard back then and families were close. He talked about his family and how dear they were to him. Hillious contracted TB when he was young and spent almost a year in a TB Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He often told us he didn't feel to bad in the hospital and often played jokes on the nurses while there. In his words "I really made it hard on them," After leaving the hospital and unable to find work locally, he moved to Indiana. Because he had a High School Diploma, Hillous was chosen for a job at RCA.

He lost his brother, Jesse and also his father, Layton to heart attacks. This deeply hurt Hillous and he never got over it.
He met Doris Janice Carter in 1958 at the Lafayette Shirt Factory. They married and had two children, Regina Arlene and Sandra Kay. They shared fifty-three wonderful years together. Hillous worked in Portland, Tennessee for a few years. Then later went to Ross Gear "TRW" in Lebanon in 1970, where he worked 27 years. Most of the time Hillous worked seven days a week, long hours, and mostly night shift at TRW. When his first Granddaughter Kayla was born in 1997, he decided to retired. Hillous thought his grandchildren, Tina, Kayla, and Wesley were the sun and the moon. Hillous was an avid hiker and nature lover. He also enjoyed hunting ginseng while in the woods. He loved games and his favorite game was Checkers. Hillous traveled all over the south east in checker tournaments including; Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Hillous placed in lower tournaments several times and he was Tennessee State Champion two years running, in 1990 and 1991. He was a lifetime member of the National Checker Federation. Hillious was a hardworking man who loved his family dearly. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Hillous is survived by; Wife, Janice Jones, Daughters, Arlene (Roger) Long, and Sandra (Terry) Fleming all of Lafayette, Grandchildren, Kayla Fleming and Wesley Fleming of Lafayette, Tina (Curtis) Parrish of Hartsville, and Derrick Cantrell, Great-Grandchildren, Colton and Emma Parrish of Hartsville, Brothers, Donald Jones, Clyde (Beatrice) Jones all of Lafayette, and Raymond Jones of Hendersonville, and Sister, Laverne (Tommy) Oldham of Smyrna.
